KRONOSPAN has challenged students to redesign the humble school desk to win a coveted Yellow Pencil in the prestigious D&AD Students Awards.
The wood-based surface and panel manufacturer has sponsored the Furniture Design category within the 2012 D&AD Student Awards - the creative industry’s benchmark for future talent.
More than 500 students have downloaded the brief and hope to win a Yellow Pencil and see their design made into a working prototype by Kronospan.
D&AD is a major educational charity focused on the creative and design industries. Its awards are highly valued and a gateway into the creative industry; 76% of student winners walk into a job or placement within three months of graduating.
Paul Duddle, product development and marketing manager for Kronospan, says: “Industry has a duty to nurture creative talent because the economy relies on new ideas to thrive. Creative innovation is key if we want to stay ahead in a competitive global marketplace.
“Kronospan has developed a design-led approach to surface manufacture and so it’s to our advantage to be associated with such a revered creative award. Also, these students are the talented specifiers of the future and we obviously want them to specify Kronospan products when they’ve made it to the top."
Tim Lindsay, CEO for D&AD, says: "Winning a D&AD Student Award is the highest accolade at this level. It is the ultimate recognition of creative potential, and one that guarantees graduates a foot in the door of their chosen profession. We're delighted to be working with Kronospan on this year's furniture design award. With the opportunity for the winning design to be created into a Kronospan prototype, it could be a real kick start to a creative career."
The Kronospan Furniture Design brief asks students to create a working table, surface or desk for people aged between seven and 17-years-old. The designs need to address contemporary educational issues and how a work desk affects learning.
The students submitted their entries at the beginning of March and judging takes place between Monday 16 and Thursday 19 April 2012 at Olympia in London. D&AD will then announce the Best of Year winners and nominees by the end of April. The Student Yellow Pencil winners will be revealed at an exclusive event in London on Tuesday 26 June.
